Bahia de San Quintin Bahía de San Quintín is the largest and only intact coastal lagoon system in the entire Mediterranean zone of North America. It is among the richest, most diverse, and most imperiled ecosystems on the planet, supporting dozens of species designated as Threatened or Endangered. The survival of this remarkable landscape, however, is threatened by development pressures from a growing population and the thrust of tourism southward from the U.S. border. This document presents a vision for addressing these conservation and socioeconomic challenges through new partnerships and an integrative approach to conservation and management of natural resources within a sustainable human community. (September 2007)

Urocyon littoralis clemente A Population Monitoring Framework For Five Subspecies of Island Fox — Island foxes (Urocyon littoralis) inhabit the six largest Channel Islands off the coast of southern California, with a separate subspecies recognized on each island.  Due to their limited geographic distribution and small population sizes, foxes on all six islands have been listed as Threatened by the State of California, and four subspecies have been listed as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to recent precipitous population declines and high risk of extinction.  In response to a request from the Recovery Coordination Group of the Island Fox Integrated Recovery Team, the Conservation Biology Institute was commissioned to develop a monitoring framework for five subspecies of island fox. Fisher AssessmentSouthern Sierra Nevada Fisher Assessment —The Pacific fisher (Martes pennanti) is a large member of the weasel family associated with dense, structurally complex, low- to mid-elevation forests in California and Oregon. Remaining populations are small, disconnected from one another, and threatened by habitat modification and fragmentation. In 2004, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that Pacific fishers were warranted protection under the Endangered Species Act, but that listing the species was precluded by higher priorities. (October 2006)

ReportConservation Resource Support Service — There is a sizeable community of nongovernmental organizations (NGO) in San Diego County involved in the conservation and management of the region’s important biological and cultural resources, which are increasingly threatened by development pressures. This community of land trusts and Friends groups has similar goals and a demonstrated commitment to working together, but often lacks the capacity to meet their organizations’ objectives. A potential approach to supporting the needs of many NGOs in the county would be to establish a Conservation Resource Center or Conservation Resource Collaborative (CRC). Such a center or collaborative would support the constructive involvement of citizens and citizen organizations in the implementation of the San Diego region's habitat conservation planning and protection efforts, biological and cultural resources stewardship activities, applied research and biological monitoring, and adaptive habitat management. In addition, the CRC could facilitate environmental education and help to coordinate volunteerism by students and the public. (March 2003)
